It is time for Newburgh’s political leaders to step up

Lillie Howard

Wow! Once again, the City of Newburgh has blown apart and it seems that this is just the tip of the iceberg.

More heads should roll in the aftermath of City Manager Richard Herbeck’s situation. Other officials had to have collaborated in the first Herbeck incident for it to have been shut down the way that it was. Who are the culprits?

Corruption in the City of Newburgh never stops and our so-called leaders are to blame. Most of them have been silent throughout the years, and so the condition of this city weighs heavily upon their shoulders. Their silence suggests they’re satisfied with things the way that they are. This incident involving City Manager Herbeck is just the tip of an iceberg that is getting ready to have a big meltdown.

When are the citizens who have been greatly affected by this corruption throughout the years going to wake up and get seriously involved? I’ve been told that there has been a lot of money doled out to faith-based entities, and all the silence coming from the churches leads one to believe that this is so. How sad! Also, why has the NAACP been so silent in the midst of all of this madness throughout the years?

It’s sad that a city council consisting of five democrats - including three African Americans - can take part in this ongoing madness. This city council is being manipulated by outside sources that want to change the profile of this city and that’s a criminal shame.

Curlie Dillard, I can’t believe you have become so docile, because that’s not the way that you used to be - or was that just an act you were playing years ago? What happened to the Curlie who used to espouse strong feelings about what was or wasn’t going on with the downtrodden of this community? Think back on the words you used to share with me and what you wanted for the little people. Were you acting? If so, you’re going to eventually pay the price because the truth will eventually rise up again.

I tip my hat to Omari Shakur because he had the guts to stand up and expose the madness that is going on. Some dislike him, but his heart is definitely in the right place. He might not look nor talk like some would like, but he believes in getting the job done. He’s had his downs in life, but so have a lot of you. No one is without flaws but when one sits back and points their fingers at others they should realize that three of those fingers are pointing back at themselves.

Truthfully, until we have leaders that are not about what they can do for themselves, but about what they can do for others, we’ll never see a genuine change in Newburgh. It’s time to wake up, get involved and be a part of what’s going to be next.

The City of Newburgh is on the verge of renewal, but who is that renewal going to benefit? Either you’re going to be a part of that renewal or you’re going to be a part of the removal. Elections are coming up soon. Make sure that you’re registered to vote and cast your vote for the individuals who are going to make sure that Newburgh’s future will benefit all.

Seriously think on that because if not you’ll only have yourself to blame. Seriously think about what is next and who is next. This is Lillie’s Point of View!
