Going home service for Carolyn Bryer

Carolyn Marie Bryer (1920-2008)

Beacon - On October 15, 2008 Carolyn Marie Bryer peacefully departed this life after a short stay at St. Lukes Hospital, Newburgh, NY. She had long been ill and was being cared for at home in Beacon, NY, by her loving daughter, Donica Bryer.

Carolyn was born Caroline Marie Givens on February 26, 1920 to the late Esther Corbin Givens and Raymond Givens Sr. in Macon, GA. Shortly after graduating Ballard Normal High School and attending Beta Eta College she found a job as a clerk with the U.S. Army.

While attending a WWII USO dance with her sister Helen, Carolyn met Corporal Irvine Bryer. They had a lot in common: both were one of six siblings (three sisters and three brothers), both had been raised by widowed fathers, and they both shared a belief in church, community and education and both ballroom danced. Therefore no one was surprised when they married. After her husband was released from duty, the couple moved with their infant daughter to Beacon, NY, where eight more children were born.

Carolyn served her community and church. She was a honorary member of the Les Seours Amiables Civic Club, the NAACP, and as a 60 year member of the Star of Bethlehem Baptist Church, she served as a Deaconess, on the missionary board, choir and on other ministries. She was an avid collector of copper pieces, coins and her beloved dolls. Her doll shows were not only beautiful to behold, but educational. She often gave lectures, using her dolls as props, frequently at the King Library at St. Andrews Episcopal Church. Children and adults alike looked forward to her annual Christmas doll show, which was often held at the South Avenue Elementary School, Beacon, NY.

Carolyn often prayed that none of her children would pass before her. God honored that prayer and she is survived by all of her children: Beverly F. McLean, Irvine A. Bryer Jr. (Michelle), Cheryl A. Hallums, Kenneth W. Bryer, Linda C. Green, Samara M. Bryer, Adrienne Grier (Glenn) Donica C. Bryer and Zonyia G. Bryer, her Sister Helen Wesley (Samuel), eleven grandchildren, eighteen great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins. She is predeceased by her husband, Irvine Bryer Sr., her brothers, Raymond Givens Sr., Curtis Givens, and Walter Givens, and her sister, Dorothy Oliver.

Visitation will be Thursday, October 23rd, 9:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m. at Springfield Baptist Church, 8 Church Street (Mattie Cooper Sq.), Beacon, New York 12508, hosted by her current church, Star of Bethleham of Beacon, NY. Services will begin at 11:00 a.m. Officiating: Rev. Ronald O. Perry Sr., Eulogy: Rev. Irvine A. Bryer, Jr. Interment will be at Fishkill Rural Cemetery in Fishkill, New York, followed by a repast sponsored by the Star of Bethlehem Baptist Church, Beacon, at Springfield Baptist NY. Funeral arrangements are under the supervision of Rhodes Funeral Homes.

"I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh my help."

- Psalm 121
