Elizabeth “Bay” Johnson entered into eteranl rest on Wendesday, May 21, 2008. She was 69.
The Poughkeepsie, New York resident was a retired IBM System Analysis. Johnson was a member of Smith Metropolitan AME Zion Church in Poughkeepsie. At the time of her death she was serving as Chair of the Trustee Board. She was also the President of the local Missionary Society, Life’s Matron, Sunday School, Church Women United and President of the Thursday Luncheon Committee.
She was the AME Zion and Trinity Housing Board Treasurer. She also served on the Board of Directors at the Harriet Tubman Terrace Apts. and also was the founder and director of the Harriet Tubman summer camp for several years. She was Leader of Leaders of the Class Leaders Board and she volunteered for the Frank Wells Scholarship Fund in Poughkeepsie, New York. She is a member of The World Federation of Methodist and Uniting Church Women and the National Council of Negro Women. In June 2007 she was appointed by Bishop George E. Battle, Jr., presiding prelate of the northeastern Episcopal area, to serve as the Westchester district representative for the national council of negro women.
Johnson is survived by her two daughters, Deborah Lewis and Angelique Johnson; Living siblings, Anna Daniels of Red Oaks Mills, Arabell Denny, Mary Ellen Whitaker and husband Sherman of Poughkeepsie, New York, David Lawrence and Richard Lawrence and wife Patricia all of Poughkeepsie, New York; Five grandchildren, Neal Lewis, Jr., Derrick Lewis, Tavares Johnson, Mecca Johnson, Sacred Shamsiddeen,; Two great grandchildren, Zakiyah Lewis and Za’Karie Lewis all of Poughkeepsie, New York ; A special sister-in-law, Paulette Lawrence of Poughkeepsie, New York and Carl and Staff of Tubman Terrace Apartments. Several nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends. She was predeceased by husband, Augustus Johnson, parents, Gladys Green, Rosetta McClinton, baby sister, Betty Lou Lawrence, Lonnie Lawrence, Jr., George Tyson “Duke” Lawrence.
Visitation will take place on Tuesday at Rhodes Funeral Homes Chapel, 43 Fairview Avenue, Poughkeepsie from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM. A second visitation will take place on Wendesday, May 28 at 9:00AM unto 11:00AM at Smith Metropolitan AME Zion Church, 124 Smith Street, Poughkeepsie, New York.
