Protecting our kids from religious predators

Chris Stevenson

Part I of II

There are a lot of people out there who believe in religion but don’t believe in God. These are the churchgoers and church-leaders that are the least criticized and least taken to task in most religions. One reason is, they have most of you fooled.

Recently the Irish Catholic Church have been revealed as having covered up cases of child sexual molestation from 1975-2004. Given the far-famed and infamous history of the Irish as a bunch of drunken brawlers just looking for a reason to fight, I am mystified as to how they could pass this up. Is there any better reason for Danny Boy to smash his way into his Church’s office and take Bishop O’Reilly to task? A lot of you look upon that guy seen carrying little Shaniya Davis away as being despicable, but will remain silent when this happens in your very building of worship. What’s going on here is, the churches are the original promoters of "Image is Everything" and the direct result of that is something I call RSM (religiously sanctioned molestation).

According to the BBC "four Archbishops turned a blind eye to child abuse;" John Charles McQuaid, Dermont Ryan, Desmond Connell and Kevin McNamara. Churches over the decades successfully used threats of expulsion and excommunication as penalty for reporting child sex abuse going on with members of their congregation. Not a bad deal actually. Let me see now, you want me to trade in my manhood and sense of right and wrong by protecting an innocent child, in favor of preventing mandatory police and medical assistance from access to the child... and remain a member in good standing. You lose!

More facts and figures on the complicity of the Irish Catholic Church come from the "Report of the Commission of Investigating into the Catholic Archdiocese of Dublin." The BBC states in order to simply avoid public outrage and high-profile prosecutions, the church’s leaders and state officials created a "culture of concealment" from the persistent cover up of "vulnerable children in their care."

It wasn't just the bad publicity they feared, chief on any Clergy’s mind is having his services interrupted by civil authorities or law enforcement with himself being escorted out of God’s building in handcuffs, or his mugshot plastered on TV. As of now three of those Archbishop’s are deceased. They are noted in the report for their constant refusal to hand over their information about child sexual abusers to the authorities even though the four were considered highly educated. Their success in this had much to do with certain key police (senior officers) actually believing the Church was higher than themselves on some "reported abuse complaints to church authorities instead of carrying out their own investigation."

Strange that some members of the Irish Police were literally returning letters of complaint back to the Church. In the Jehovah’s Witness faith any letter of complaint regarding congregational or inter-religious issues sent to their Watchtower headquarters was immediately sent back to that congregation’s body of elders in the form of a copy and shown to the individual in question or a family member, with of course nothing being addressed about the issue. But though still wrong, it was understandable because it was all in-house. What excuse does the Irish Police have? They’re not officially tied to the church. Education is also important here. How do four men of such learning and position allow this to happen to children of their followers? This isn’t like Mario McNeil (Shaniya’s alleged rapist and killer); a repeat violent offender of probably very limited schooling or the Phoenix, AZ parents of an eight-year-old girl who shunned her after she was gang-raped by four boys. The Phoenix girl had extremely dimwitted parents who shunned her in part because they are from Liberia where ignorance and superstition rules and kids have had limbs cut off just to protect the diamond industry.

  • February 8th, 2010 I hate to tell you but... alot of thing are swept under the carpet not only with Jehovah's Witnesses's but many other religious organizations, schools and more.

It really happens and it's easy to comment for thos who have not experienced it but it's real! If you chose to be blind to things that are happening around you than you will not see what is happening before your own eyes.

If you know about it an don't report it then you thats just not acceptable. Children do what thier told weather right or wrong and sometime they need help. How would you feel if you were a child and you were scared and you couldn't say anything.

Let's face it It happens and can happen any where with anyone men or women. ou just need listen if someone crys out ofr help or if you see something or feel something is wrong there a thing called an annoymous tip. If you care you will help it's not right when you think about how scared you are think of the child whose going through it.

It's not about religious bashing jehovah witnesses bashing it's about whats right or wrong and if you keep youre eyes shut you will never see. Not everyone who seems good is good. Not everyone is innocent Jehovah's Witnesses LIE too just like other people they are not perfect.

  • January 16th, 2010 I have been a JW all my life and even disfellowshipped twice! However I have no doubt that I am in the best religion on the planet. I have lived in 5 countries and travelled another 35 countries so have seen more than the average person. There are evil people all over the planet and a small number call themeselves JW's and abuse children in their care.
99.9% of JW's would be shocked and like me would like to see those ones disfellowshipped and reported to the police. OK sometimes it happens that some may get away with what they did. Yes all Elders should encourage the victims to go to the police. A district overseer told me that problems happen when this does not happen. However we live in the 'last days' and injustice will sometimes in our Organization HOWEVER I would rather be in this religion than any other one on the planet. I know people from many countries and I believe that the witnesses as a group are doing their best to help their neighbours to know what is behind the evil in the world. Any JW who abuses children are despicable and if they don't stop will be destroyed at Armageddon and good riddence to them. I don't think they will have an easy death either. I beleive that Jehovah will be very merciful to the victims of these abusers. I feel sorry for them. If someone molests my son, I would go to the police and then tell the elders. But I would not be stumbled from my faith. It will give my family and I life in a paradise where no child abuser will exist.

  • January 14th, 2010 Jehovah's Witnesses have an absurd in house Church rule requiring 'two witnesses' to acts of sin. This makes it difficult to prosecute secret sins as child molesters rarely provide a 'witness' to their dastardly deeds.

Moreover, members are discouraged from going to 'outsiders' the police and reporting sins.
That's it,..this is what can make the pedophilia worst among the Jehovah's Witnesses group compared with other mainstream religions.

  • January 14th, 2010 In 1972 Watchtower, the organization over JWs, printed a directive that was read only by Elders (in a manual for elders only), stating Bodies Of Elders need not delete as an Elder any who confessed to molestation provided several years (later defined as 2-3 yrs) had passed and the molester seemed to still enjoy Jehovah's blessing which meant his molesting had not become widely known. Every year since 1972 more and more pedophiles have mounted up among JWs, imperilling JW children, also dangerous for JW women and men who speak out against Watchtower over this. Some posters here think they are defending JWs but out of lack of knowledge are actually defending Watchtower and the child molesters.

These COURT CASE summaries include 400 cases where the JW Parents refused to consent to life-saving blood transfusions for their dying children, as well as numerous CRIMINAL cases -- many involving murders, molestations, etc:

  • January 14th, 2010 What's the situation with child abuse in Jehovah's Witnesses?

Not good. They take Deuteronomy 19:15 literally, which demands two witnesses to a crime (not easy in cases of abuse). And they cite 1 Corinthians 6:1-11 – Does anyone of you that has a case against the other dare to go to court before unrighteous men, and not before the holy ones? – to justify trying to deal with criminals with courts of elders rather than courts of law. A British Panorama investigation reported they have an internal list of 23,720 reported abusers which they keep private.

Studies in the US suggest they have proportionally four times more sexual assaults on children than the Catholic Church

  • January 14th, 2010 How Jehovah's Witnesses are to handle ANY cases where an allegation of child molestation has been made has been made crystal clear and published in the Watchtower and also the current study publication which is being studied in congregations. It has been discussed in public talks given by elders in the halls and so- Every single member of the organization is fully aware- (because it has been provided to us in the form of advice from the governing body)- that there is NOTHING WRONG WITH GOING TO THE POLICE AND WE SHOULD DO SO if we are ever in that horrible situation- no matter who the perp was. No matter what his (or her) responsibilities within the organization were.

We have been clearly advised that we are under no obligation to protect anyone who abuses children- regardless.

We are under obligation to keep that kind of creepy behaviour out of the congregation and so, if such comes to our attention, we are under obligation to do what we can to make sure it is properly dealt with.

We are obligated to protect children.

And Beth Shan- you were never a Witness. No Witness or former Witness would refer to any elders as Witness Clergy or a Witness clergyman. Further, you clearly do not understand bloodguilt or what that means- if you had ever been a Witness, you would be much better informed about what you speak of... seriously secret JW clergy handbook?

Stop... you are going to hurt yourself.

Based on what you clearly do not know, it should not surprise anyone that you are not aware of any requirement for Witnesses to go to the police.

Danny Hazzard is clearly a broken little man.

Anyone who tells you otherwise is very poorly informed.

  • January 13th, 2010 Janette, your statement: JW (Jehovah Witness) victims are always told to go to the police is simply not true. There are countless cases documented all over the internet, including www.silentlambs.org and covered by the media (Dateline, BBC, etc.) showing that JW victims have NOT been protected or advised to go to the police and in addition have been disfellowshipped/ excommunicated and shunned by the JW community for speaking out about the abuse. The Watchtower organization recently settled over 16 lawsuits for sexual molestation. Why did these folks have to sue the Watchtower if they already went to the police and received justice for themselves or their child?

  • January 13th, 2010 Reader Janette said: W victims are always told to go to the police.

Either Janette is not a jw, unfamiliar with jw policies, or she is lying.

I was a jw and later a therapist who treated jw abuse victims. I have personally witnessed jw clergy instructing members going to the police will cause them to be bloodguilty (a spiritual offense punishable by execution by God) because it would make the congregation look bad (bring reproach) and thus discourage others from being involved with the cult.

I am in possession of the secret jw clergy handbook which does not in any way instruct clergy to always tell victims to go to the police.

I have personally participated in a discussion with a jw clergyman who raped his adult daughter. He said he would have her disfellowshipped (shunned and ineligible for survival at Armageddon and entry into the afterlife) if she reported it to the police, stopped having sex with her abusive husband, or failed to resume a cordial social relationship with the rapist.

Besides my personal experiences, I can say with certainty there is no official or unofficial jw teaching instructing all abuse victims to go to the police. Absolutely none.

  • January 13th, 2010 What a lame and prejudicial article. Shame on the lame fingerpointing without true facts. If someone accused you of molesting a child does that make it fact....The Holy Scriptures outlines a proper way to handle an accusation and JW's follow that guideline....ruining a man or a woman's reputation based on half truths or inuendos is not sufficient to stain a person or an organization....Wolves have entered into the flock and they don't say hey....I am a wolf! They hide it and when they are caught they howl like a wolf that is caught....40,000 are disfellowshipped annually and 70% of those that are disfellowshipped return to the congregation. Many of those that don't return become apostate and spread lies and hate as they are not willing to be corrected. JW's work hard to keep there congregations clean of predatory perverts....What other organization does that?....NONE! JW's aren't perfect, but they are doing their best to live by principles that honor God and his Son.....We pray daily for forgiveness....Do you?

  • January 13th, 2010 The Jehovah's Witnesses have settled lawsuits alleging church policies protected pedophile men who sexually abused children for many years.

The victims were required to sign gag orders to prevent them from saying anything about the money or more importantly about their abusers.

Yet more importantly the court documents that were part of the five year legal battle shows exactly what despicable sinks of debauchery that supposed leaders and elders of Jehovah's Witnesses will go to in order to protect pedophiles.
The written record is incriminating and shows the cover up, protection and enabling of Jehovah's Witness child molesters around the world.

  • January 13th, 2010 Google Jehovah's Witnesses pedophile cover up

For facts not Watchtower JW propaganda, they have only recently come to grips with the awful abuse problem and made some improvements in protection of children that plaques them this does not undo years and thousands of cases that have existed.

  • January 13th, 2010 What a shallow piece of journalism. I understand the outrage of those who genuinely experience molestation but your off hand story does not even suggest that some victims have not been prepared to go to the police and press charges. Often cases go 'hidden' by the victims themselves because they have not gone to police in a timely manner, evidence trail goes cold and then they expect prosecution years later. How can laymen be expected to interview, judge and prosecute those involved when even the police must be careful not contaminate evidence or taint statements that will be tendered to courts. JW victims are always told to go to the police and if they choose not to, why should molestation become a tool of the disgruntled, slandering possibly innocent people because no proper police investigation takes place. THAT is the stuff of inquisitions.
    You should be more careful.
