Barack Obama visits Philadelphia

Chris Stevenson

I know the Rev. Dr. Jeremiah Wright must feel like he just recorded "Sgt. Peppers" or "Thriller" the way the major media and websites kept playing video footage of a speech he made into a continuous loop over the past week or so. Talk about being on a mission. The last people I remember given such constant airplay by radio and TV outlets were Michael Jackson in ‘84 and the Beatles way back in ‘67. They had just recorded albums that would change the recording industry.

Recently, Senator Barack Obama gave a speech in Philadelphia that will change the political industry, particularly as to how black presidential candidates can be scrutinized regarding their associations, forcing a nation to grow up a little bit faster. Wright is seen talking to his congregation in the video, he is also seen making comments about how Hillary doesn’t know what it’s like to grow up poor and be raised by a single mother. Hillary doesn’t know what it’s like to hail a cab only to see it zip by her in a rush. Looking at it, I can’t picture whites calling their children inside the house (those that aren’t already inside playing video games that is) over the content of his words, but his emotionally-charged delivery was obviously a tool used by network snakes to incite white outrage and at the very least, be the big torpedo that would plunge Obama’s ratings and sink his campaign. Fortunately, it seems to have backfired.

Nationally, the "Race Speech" made little more than a dent on the minds of Obama followers. His later remarks about his grandmother being a "typical white woman," were obviously intentionally misconstrued. What you are seeing is much of the country including White America understanding the speech as a whole for what it really is and the major media and conservative talk-radio outlets more conspicuously opposed than ever. The fact is the Rev. Dr. Wright is one of this country’s foremost thinkers and leaders, white pundits actually do know that most of the raving lunatics are in their section. They have to pretend he’s this great threat, the key to the success of white supremacy is persistence.

Dr. Wright has never been Dr. Wrong, yet his words get more airplay and hate than Sistah Souljah’s statements during Bill and Hil’s first campaign back in ‘92 when many whites were outraged at her suggestion that gang-bangers take some time out to shoot white people instead. This was in response to a song and video from her first CD called "We are at War."

Beneath the white-hot outrage over some words that simply drew a comparison between Barack and Hillary is the insulting suggestion that more than a few whites think they can dictate who high-profile blacks can and cannot associate with. This is driven by many big names in the major media; talk show hosts, columnists, etc. Back when Jesse Jackson first ran for president in ‘84, they tried to use his association with Nation of Islam leader Minister Louis Farrakhan to hurt Jackson’s credibility. Farrakhan recently commented on the efforts by talk show host Tim Russert to repeatedly repudiate and renounce pro-black leaders like himself as the "Farrakhan Litmus Test." If Obama were a member of the materially- gluttonous T.D. Jakes or Creflo Dollar congregations, none of this would be an issue. Whites have no issue or fear regarding black preachers who exploit and spiritually disenfranchise black parishioners with Mega-Churches over messages of empowerment. You can’t get any more non-threatening than that.
