Black Knights Crush Staten Island 108-64

WEST POINT - Senior Jen Hazlett totaled season highs of 22 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Army women’s basketball team to a 108-64 victory over Staten Island on Sunday afternoon at Christl Arena.
The Black Knights wrap up their nonconference slate with an overall mark of 8-3, while the Dolphins slip to 7-3. Six Army players scored in double figures, as the Black Knights reached 108 points for the first time in Christl Arena, topping their previous mark of 103 against Coast Guard on Nov. 18, 2005.
Hazlett shot 6-of-11 from the field for Army, including a career-high six three-pointers in a 6-of-8 performance from behind the arc. Sophomore Kelsey Minato finished in double digits for a Patriot League-best 27th game in a row, netting 16 points, including an 8-for-8 showing on free-throws.
Junior Olivia Schretzman shot 6-of-8 from the floor to finish with 12 points and five boards, and sophomore Aimee Oertner netted 12 points and controlled six rebounds. Freshman Danielle Failor equaled her career high with 11 points, while also grabbing eight rebounds, and junior Jordan Elliott finished with a season-best 11 points, including 9-for-10 from the charity stripe.
Sophomore Megan Myhre paced Staten Island with 20 points, while classmate Lisa Galasso neared a double-double with 14 points and nine boards. Senior Melanie Johnson totaled 15 points, and classmate Katelyn Hepworth finished with nine points off the bench.
Hazlett hit three of her first five attempts from three-point range in the opening 6:04, as the Black Knights opened up to a 20-12 advantage. Schretzman’s lay-up capped a 27-9 Army run over the ensuing 7:11 to extend its lead to 47-21 with 6:45 remaining in the opening half. The hosts closed the half on a 16-10 run, during which Minato and sophomore Bridget Ryan netted five points apiece.
Army began the second half picking up where it left of in the first, hitting four of its first five shots in the frame to extend its advantage to 37 at 72-35. The Black Knights held an 84-45 lead with 8:35 left in the second frame before Myhre’s three sparked a 7-4 Staten Island run to cut the deficit to 31 with 6:27 to play. The Dolphins wouldn’t get any closer though, as the hosts closed the game on a 22-9 run during a 6:03 span. Elliott led the way for the Black Knights down the stretch, hitting all 11 of her points in the final 3:49.
Army returns to Christl Arena on Thursday, Jan. 2, when it faces Lafayette in both teams’ Patriot League opener. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
