Princeton Defeats Marist Womenâ€™s Basketball
Marist Sophomore Madeline Blais (25) led the Red Foxes with 15 points against Princeton.
PRINCETON, N.J. - The Marist women’s basketball team fell to Ivy League powerhouse, Princeton, on Sunday afternoon, 81-58. Sophomore Madeline Blais scored a team high 15 points, shooting 6-9 from the field. Senior Emma O’Connor recorded a team high six rebounds.
Senior Leanne Ockenden posted 10 points and five rebounds. Freshmen Katharine Fogarty and Brittni Lai scored nine and seven points respectively.
Princeton had five players score in double digits; Kristen Helmstetter (18), Michelle Miller (11), Vanessa Smith (11), Alex Wheatley (10), and Blake Dietrick (10).
Blais scored the first basket of the game, followed by a three from Princeton’s Michelle Miller. This is the last lead the Tigers would see until there was 7:43 left in the first half. The Red Foxes run was highlighted by five points from Blais, seven points from Ockenden, and a three from Fogarty. A Tigers 24-23 lead would be short lived as O’Connor sank two free throws and Lai made a three. Princeton responded, going on a 15-5 run to take a 41-32 lead heading into halftime.
Ockenden opened up the second half with a three to cut the deficit, 41-38. This is the closest Marist would come to regaining the lead as the Tigers out-scored the Red Foxes 40-26 in the second half. Kristen Helmstetter led Princeton in the second half with 10 points to earn the Tigers a 81-58 victory.
Marist moves to 0-3 overall heading into the Hall of Fame Challenge hosted by Ohio State next weekend. The Red Foxes will face Bowling Green, Ohio State, and Old Dominion.
