POUGHKEEPSIE - The Marist women’s basketball team clinched at least a share of the MAAC regular season championship and the top seed at next month’s MAAC Championships with a 66-47 win on Sunday at McCann Arena. The regular season title is the 10th straight for Marist.
Four Red Foxes were in double figures in scoring, led by freshmen Sydney Coffey who finished with a team-high 14 points and added two assists and two blocks while making her third career start. Casey Dulin and Elizabeth Beynnon both scored 11 points, while Dulin tied her personal best with three three-pointers. Leanne Ockenden had 10 points while registering team-highs with seven rebounds and six assists. She also had three steals and tied a career-high with three blocks.
After Marist (19-6, 14-0 MAAC) fell behind 6-0 in the first three minutes of the game, the Red Foxes went on a 13-0 run to take the lead. Beynnon put back an offensive rebound to start the run and Coffey found Emma O’Connor for a jumper before making a layup to knot the score at six. Beynnon then made another layup and Coffey hit a pair of free throws. Ockenden capped off the run with a three-pointer.
Manhattan (6-19, 3-11 MAAC) came back to tie the score at 16, but a Coffey trey gave Marist the lead for good.
The Red Foxes scored the first eight points to open a 44-29 lead 6:04 into the second half. O’Connor scored the first five points on a layup and 3-4 shooting from the charity stripe. Coffey then hit her second three-pointer to bring the lead to double digits at 38-27.
Ockenden then made one of her three blocks on the defensive end and, after Manhattan got the defensive rebound, she stripped the ball and took it for a breakaway layup. Beynnon followed with a turnaround, fade-away jumper from the baseline.
Marist closes out its three-game home-stand on Friday night when Rider comes to McCann Arena for a 7 p.m. game. It will be the Red Foxes’ annual Pack the House game with this year’s theme being a whiteout - all fans are encouraged to wear white.
