Three local standouts sign with SUNY Sullivan
Ellenville High School standout Regina Steele signs her letter of intent to play for the SUNY Sullivan women’s basketball team in the upcoming season.
Loch Sheldrake - It has been an active month of signings for the SUNY Sullivan Lady Generals. Just days after two players from Newburgh Free Academy signed their letters of intent to attend SUNY Sullivan in the fall; the team also signed Regina Steele - a standout Forward from Ellenville High School.
Steele averaged 22 points, 15 rebounds and 7.5 blocks per game in her senior year, finishing her High School career with 1,103 total points. She was named a 2012 Times Herald-Record First Team All-Star, and was the Mid-Hudson Athletic League Player of the Year for 2012.
“Her scoring ability and basketball IQ make her a constant threat on the offensive end. She will fit well into the defensive system I will have in place,” says SUNY Sullivan Coach Ryan Meikle, who sees Steele as the type of player who will keep defenders off balance and outside their comfort zones.
“She has the all around ability to change a game,” adds Meikle, “and I couldn’t be more excited to have [Steele] on my roster.”
SUNY Sullivan’s signing of Steele follows closely on the heels of two others: Kenisha Lawrence and Tashalee Lawrence - both seniors from a 2012 Newburgh Free Academy team that made a run at the OCIAA Division I title, and was the #2 seed during the Section 9 Class AA playoffs.
Kenisha Lawrence (Point Guard) averaged 9.2 points, 8.4 rebounds, and 5.3 assists in 2012. Tashalee (Forward), averaged 6.4 points, 7.8 rebounds. Both players also posted good numbers in steals, which plays well into Coach Ryan Meikle’s defensive-minded style.
Coach Ryan Meikle will begin the 2012/2013 season as the Lady Generals head coach this fall, taking over for Dean Sara Thompson-Tweedy.
