Poughkeepsie - Competing in just the second 200 meter dash of his college career, freshman Mathue Duhaney won the Men’s 200 meter dash with a time of 23.56 Friday evening under the lights at the Matthew Vassar Track Open.
Duhaney’s time was a personal best, and he edged out second place finisher Morrison Boateng of Manhattanville by .38 seconds. Vassar’s Rafael Ricaurte and Xiao Chen placed fifth and sixth respectively in the 200 with times of 26.35 and 26.78.
"Mathue ran great," said Vassar head coach James McCowan. "He has so much ability, desire, and strength, and to watch him run is a real joy. With more running and meet experience, he is really going to fly and become an excellent sprinter."
Coach McCowan also praised the performance of sophomore Philip McDermott, who placed fifth in the shot put with a throw of 10.36 meters. "He had a four meter improvement and set a new school record," McCowan said. Vassar’s Zach Ward finished eighth with an 8.83 meter throw.
The Brewers also found success in the 4x400 meter relay, with its ‘A’ team winning with a time of 3:38.33, edging out a quickly approaching SUNY New Paltz, which finished just over a second behind.
Vassar notched four of the top six finishers in the 1500 meter run, led by sophomore Zach Williams, who came in second with a personal best time of 4:05.84. Freshman Sam Wagner, who set a new school record two weeks ago with a time of 4:02.47, placed third with a time of 4:09.23. SUNY New Paltz junior Joe Gentsch won the race, qualifying for the ECAC Championships with an impressive time of 3:58.09. Also placing in the 1500 for Vassar were Matt Blair in fifth (4:14.92) and Evan Russek in sixth (4:20.37).
George Adams was the only Vassar competitor in the 800 meter run, and placed seventh with a time of 2:05.89.
Freshman Roni Teich finished third in the 3000 meter run with a time of 34 minutes.
