NEWBURGH – Mount Saint Mary College director of athletics John Wright is delighted to announce that men’s and women’s track will be added to the College’s intercollegiate athletics programs. Current cross country coach Fred Callo will coach both programs, slated to begin competition in 2011.
“Our goal is to increase the number of opportunities for our current student-athletes and to encourage potential new student-athletes to consider Mount Saint Mary College,” said Wright. “With Fred Callo on board to build the program, we’re hoping for results similar to the success of the cross country programs.”
The teams will compete in the Collegiate Track Conference, and will become just the fourth member of the Skyline Conference to sponsor track, joining Farmingdale State College, St. Joseph’s College, and Bard College.
Following the successful introduction of cross country to Mount Saint Mary College in 2007, Callo is charged with starting a second set of programs from scratch.
“I am excited to have the opportunity to build another program here at Mount Saint Mary College. Due to the overwhelming success of the cross country programs, it was a natural progression to add track. Athletes that are drawn to the sport of running at the college level expect to train and compete in both semesters. A year-round program will certainly help in recruiting high-caliber student-athletes to the Mount.”
At present, Mount Saint Mary College offers fifteen intercollegiate sports, including men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s soccer, men’s and women’s swimming, men’s and women’s tennis, men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s lacrosse, baseball, softball, and women’s volleyball.
