10k marks anniversary of Shorter’s medal win
Orange County Race Weekend will kick-off on June 2, 2012. The weekend includes the Classic 10k, the Rowley 5k race and walk, and the Junior Classic.
Middletown - June 2, 2012 will kick-off the Crystal Run Healthcare Classic 10K, The Orange County Race Weekend. Inspired by Middletown’s Olympic Marathon Gold and Silver Medal Winner, Frank Shorter, the Classic 10K has continued to build year after year and attracts more than 1,000 elite and local runners alike. 2012 also marks the 40th Anniversary of Frank Shorter winning the Olympic Gold Medal.
The weekend includes the Classic 10K, a 6.2 mile race through the streets of Middletown, the Rowley 5K race and walk (3.2 miles), the Junior Classic races for kids, the Community Health Expo and finish line party. All activities are centered at Middletown High School’s Faller Field.
The Classic 10K race starts at 8:30 a.m. on Sunday, June 3rd. New for this year are cheering sections at every kilometer. Runners will vote for their favorite cheering section and the one with the most votes will receive prizes. Musicians will perform along the course.
The Rowley 5k race and walk starts at 7:45 a.m. on Sunday morning. Open to runners and walkers of all levels of skill and fitness, the Rowley 5K includes the Rowley Cup Challenge for high school teams.
The event-filled weekend kicks off Saturday, June 2nd at 9 a.m. with the Junior Classic. All Junior Classic events are free. Events include a series of 50 to 800 meter age-group runs for children up through Middle School, a parent-child 800 meter relay race and the Junior Classic Miles: four one mile races for various ages, including a Middle School Challenge between teams from Twin Towers and Monhagen Middle Schools.
The Community Health Expo will take place on Sunday, June 3rd, from 8 a.m. - noon at the Middletown High School stadium. The health expo is free and open to the public.
