Vassar women’s relay teams earn ECAC spots

Junior Kelly Holmes and the Vassar women’s 4 x 800 meter relay team earned a spot at the ECAC Championships with a strong showing over the weekend.
Poughkeepsie - Relay prowess ruled the day as the Vassar Women’s Track Team earned two more spots at the upcoming ECAC Championships in May with qualifying times set by both the 4 x 100 and 4 x 800 Meter Relay teams at the Vassar April Invitational. They join the 4 x 400 team that qualified earlier this season.
In the scored meet, Vassar showcased its burgeoning team improvement with a 2nd place finish out of 11 teams. The Brewers finished with 129 points, right behind Oneonta State with 178 points, and two points better than Liberty League rival RPI with 127.

“Today was not about the final team score, but continued progress toward our championship meets, which are the Liberty League meet next Saturday and the ECAC Championships in May,” said head coach James McCowan. “We’re obviously very excited about today’s results, especially being ahead of a Liberty League opponent. The team continues to move in a very positive and exciting direction.”

That direction was showcased by the 4 x 100 Meter Relay team, who set a new school record in its winning performance. The team of Heather Ingraham, Nina Anderson, Katy Hwang and Ariel Bridges finished in 50.95, best of the six-team field that included Division I Marist.

The 4 x 800 Meter Relay team closed out the afternoon with a nifty 9:49.75 effort with a team comprised on Payton Johnson, Tiffany Marchell, Kelly Holmes and Viviane Ford.

Freshman Ariel Bridges won the 200 Meter Dash in 26.65, the first of three school records she would set on Saturday. Bridges later set a new school record in the long jump with a 5 meter leap, besting the previous mark of 4.84 set in 2009. Not done, Bridges set a new school record in the shot put with a 7.81 toss, besting the previous mark of of 6.23, set by Laura Van Eerde at the 2010 Liberty League Outdoor Track & Field Championships.
