CENTER VALLEY, Pa. – Eddie Kang has been named the Patriot League Men’s Tennis Scholar-Athlete of the Year, as announced by the conference office on Monday morning. The senior established a new career singles win record this season while posting above a 3.30 cumulative grade point average.
In order to be eligible for this honor, a student-athlete must carry above a 3.20 cumulative grade point average while being a key member of the team.
Kang, a senior from Glenview, Ill., earned two Patriot League Player of the Month honors this season and was named the team’s Most Valuable Player at the annual banquet.
“I’m incredibly pleased with Eddie,” said head coach Jim Poling. “I can’t say enough about how hard of a worker he is, both on and off the court. He has really done a lot to improve our program in the four years he has been here.”
On April 13, Kang defeated John Nougeras of Colgate in straight sets at the No. 2 position for the 66th win of his career, establishing the all-time record for career singles wins at Army. He closed his career with 68 career singles wins and 52 doubles wins. The 52 doubles wins rank eighth all-time at Army and make Kang one of only two players in Army history with more than 60 singles wins and 50 doubles wins.
For the season, Kang posted an 18-4 singles record, the third most wins in a single season in Army history. He was a perfect 7-0 against Patriot League opponents, running his career record to 23-4 against league opponents.
Kang will graduate this May with a degree in East Asian Studies. His first duty as a second lieutenant will be leading a group of cadets on a month-long trip to China, where the group will gain experience being in a foreign country and will spend time teaching English to Chinese children.
Kang will return to West Point in the fall to serve as the Athletic Intern working with the men’s tennis program.
