Shelton clinches Army’s 5-2 victory over Lehigh

Army Senior Rashad Shelton won 4-6, 6-3, 6-1 to clinch the Black Knights’ win.

WEST POINT – Army men’s tennis completed a weekend sweep of Patriot League foes capped by a hard-fought 5-2 win over Lehigh on Sunday morning. The Black Knights (12-5, 3-0 PL) defeated three conference opponents over the course of the weekend highlighted by the win over the Mountain Hawks (12-4, 1-1 PL) who had dealt Army a surprising loss last season.

The Black Knights swept the doubles matches for the fourth consecutive dual as junior Asika Isoh and freshman Harrison McCormick inched closer to making the Army record book. Isoh and McCormick earned their 13th win of the dual season with an 8-4 decision over Mitchell Petersen and Mark Goldberg at No. 1. The duo is one win shy of moving into a tie for ninth all-time for single-season doubles wins. Isoh and classmate Henry Jang-Milsten added their names to the list during the 2012 season with 16 victories to rank fourth-best in Army’s 93-season history.

Jang-Milsten and sophomore Peter Sienko scored their 11th win of the spring with an 8-5 win at No. 3, while senior Rashad Shelton and freshman Austin McCasin improved to 8-4 with an 8-6 victory at No. 2.

McCormick gave Army a 2-0 lead with a 6-2, 6-1 victory at No. 5 over Andrew Krentz, improving to 11-3.

Army’s lead shrank to 3-1 after freshman Ben Davies lost 7-5, 6-4 at No. 6, giving Shelton the opportunity to clinch the match with a win at No. 2. Army’s lone senior on the court lost his first set to Mark Goldberg 6-4 before battling back to capture the second 6-3. Shelton jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the third and decisive set before splitting the next two games to lead 4-1. Shelton cruised through the final two games, clinching the Army win with a 4-6, 6-3, 6-1 victory.
