Vassar women roll to second straight win

Vassar Senior captain Carolyn Demougeot’s posted her second straight two goal performance on Saturday against Mount Saint Mary College.

Newburgh - The Vassar College women’s soccer team won its second straight contest by a score of 3-1, this time propelled by senior Carolyn Demougeot’s two-goal second half performance against Mount Saint Mary College on Saturday afternoon.

The Brewers take a 2-0 record into the Manhattanville Tournament where they face Manhattanville in the first round on Saturday, September 11th at 12 p.m. Mount Saint Mary (1-1) will host the Rutgers-Newark Scarlet Raiders on Wednesday, September 8th at 7 p.m.

In the first half, freshman Gavriella Kaplan broke through for the Brewers netting the second goal of her college career in as many games. After a failed clearing attempt by the Knights, Kaplan pounced on a loose ball and found the side netting at the far post to stake the Brewers to a 1-0 advantage.

Trailing by a goal in the 53rd minute, Mount Saint Mary sophomore Lindsey Oro lined up a corner kick and played a dangerous ball into the box. It found the foot of junior Colleen Ryan, who scooted a shot past the keeper to tie the game at 1-1.

The Brewers maintained their offensive pressure, however, and were rewarded with two goals in a span of 94 seconds. In the 73rd minute, sophomore Keiko Kurita played a ball to the left wing to find Kaplan who then crossed the ball to the middle of the field where it bounced once before Demougeot ripped a shot to the back of the net.

In the 75th minute, Demougeot beat the defense up the middle and tracked down a vertical pass from junior Alix Zongrone. She then beat the keeper to the far post for her second goal of the afternoon.

Vassar out-shot the Knights by a margin of 22-3, and Mount Saint Mary senior goalkeeper Megan Cotta was called upon early and often. Cotta finished with 12 saves.

Vassar sophomore goalkeeper Ali Higgins made one save to earn the victory for the Brewers.

In the past two games, Vassar has shown identical scoring output, with Demougeot scoring a pair of goals and Kaplan adding one. This season, Demougeot leads Vassar with four goals and Kaplan is second with two goals.
