Wheeler and Krebs lead Vassar in 2-2 tie with RIT

Vassar sophomore Lucy Brainerd recorded one assist off a corner kick during the Brewer’s 2-2 tie with Rochester Institute of Technology in Poughkeepsie on Saturday.

POUGHKEEPSIE - The Vassar College women’s soccer team battled a back-and-forth game with nationally ranked #25 Rochester Institute of Technology on Saturday afternoon at Gordon Field that ended in a 2-2 tie.

RIT’s Sierra Kiss was the first to put away a ball into the back of the net at 53:26 when a drop pass to the Brewer keeper, Emma Nichols didn’t have enough power behind it. Kiss was able to pick off the pass and drive around Nichols for the 1-0 lead.

The Brewers responded at 58:06 when sophomore Becca Olson sent a long cross pass from the right side of the pitch to waiting junior Chloe Wheeler. Wheeler ripped the shot into the back right corner of the Amanda Murray-defended net.

Less than a minute later at 59:15, Kiss sent a cross pass that was intercepted by senior defender Becki Pearce-Probst. Pearce-Probst’s handling on the ball was lost after the interception, which unfortunately, resulted in the ball going into the net for a Tiger 2-1 lead.

At 78:16, sophomore Lucy Brainerd sent a corner kick to the near, left side post where freshman Emily Krebs was waiting. Krebs got a redirect chip on the ball which went around Murray and just barely crossed the line, tying the game once again.

RIT’s Elizabeth May took a shot in the first overtime period at 97:16 which was close to going up and over Nichols. Nichols however jumped for the save.

Brainerd and Wheeler both had near, game-winning shots in the second overtime period. Brainerd’s shot went wide left while Wheeler’s header was saved by Murray.

The Brewers recorded 20 shots with eight on goal compared to RIT’s nine shots with five on target. Vassar also recorded 13 fouls to RIT’s 10 and held a 6-2 advantage in corner kick attempts.

This is the first time these teams have tied each other and keeps Vassar ahead in the series, 4-3-1.

The Brewers (4-5-2, 0-2-1 Liberty League) will next begin a four-game away series. The Brewers will travel to Newark, NJ on Saturday, October 12 to face Rutgers-Newark at 7:30 pm. The Tigers (7-1-3, 2-0-1 Liberty League) will next host St. Lawrence University on October 12 at 1:00 pm.
