Poughkeepsie - The Vassar College women’s soccer team suffered a 1-0 defeat to the NSCAA No. 2 nationally ranked William Smith College in Liberty League play on Saturday afternoon at Gordon Field.
William Smith dictated the game’s tempo and held a 29-3 advantage in shots. Vassar’s Lily Lanier was active in goal and made eight saves in the losing effort. Amanda Davis notched her 12th shutout of the season for William Smith, the nation’s leading team in shutout percentage.
The Brewers (6-7-1, 1-4-1 Liberty) are in seventh place in the Liberty League with four points. The Herons (12-0-1, 6-0 Liberty) remain in first place in the Liberty League with 18 points.
In the 36th minute, William Smith took a 1-0 lead on a goal by Madeline Buckley. Whitney Frary fired a pass on the ground into the box. Buckley collected the ball with her back to the goal eight yards out, turned, and drilled a low shot for her first goal of the season.
