West Point - Army senior quarterback Max Jenkins made the most of his first start, despite the horrible conditions.
Honored before the game with his classmates on Senior Day, Jenkins rushed for two touchdowns and threw for another to lead Army to a 55-0 victory over Fordham on Saturday afternoon at a snowy Michie Stadium.
Despite a storm that covered the field and required the Army facilities staff to shovel yard lines at every opportunity, Jenkins rushed for 35 yards and threw for an additional 30 yards to help the Black Knights improve to 3-5.
Army rushed for 514 yards, piled up 27 first downs and shut out Fordham for its third home win of the season.
Sophomore SB Raymond Maples ran for a career-high 159 yards on just 10 carries to pace the Army offense, while freshman RB Larry Dixon picked up 85 yards and a score on 10 rushes.
Jenkins, starting for the injured Trent Steelman, completed one of his two passes for a 30-yard touchdown.
The Black Knights’ defense limited Fordham to six first downs on the day. Senior DT Broghan Carnes made seven tackles, freshman LB Geoffrey Bacon six and junior LB Kyle Martin four and a sack. Junior LB Zach Watts also registered a sack and forced a fumble and junior LB Nate Combs returned a fumble 52 yards.
Army wasted little time in scoring its first points, going 68 yards in six plays on the first drive of the game. Maples did the bulk of the work, rushing for 67 yards to set up Jenkins’ first touchdown, a one-yard plunge. Senior K Alex Carlton kicked the first of his eight PAT’s at the 12:38 mark of the first.
Fordham went three-and-out and then Dixon went to work. He picked up 27 yards on three carries, then later closed the drive with 30-yard scoring run.
Freshman DB Lamar Johnson-Harris picked off a pass to end the next Fordham drive and Jenkins took advantage of the turnover with a seven-yard scoring run and 21-0 lead after the first quarter.
Jenkins accounted for his third touchdowns early in the second quarter, connecting with sophomore WR Anthony Stephens on a 30-yard scoring strike.
Combs then made it a 35-0 lead, scooping up a fumble and returning it through the snow for a 52-yard touchdown. Watts forced the fumble with his sack and Combs was off to the races.
Junior FB Jared Hassin got into the scoring column with a three-yard run to make it a 42-0 game at halftime.
In the second half, sophomore WR Jon Crucitti ran for a four-yard score and Tippett bulled his way in from 10 yards out to close the scoring.
Army will begin its quest for the Commander in Chiefs Trophy Saturday, November 5th at Air Force. Game time is 3:30 p.m.
