WEST POINT – The Army men’s cross country team earned the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association All-Academic Team Award, as announced Tuesday by the coaches association. In order to be eligible for the honor, the team must carry a collective cumulative grade point average above 3.0 and compile a team score at the NCAA Regional Championships.
The Black Knights have one of the largest men’s cross country rosters in the country, increasing the difficulty of earning the All-Academic team honor. Army listed 31 men on the roster this fall and posted the highest team GPA of all teams at West Point during the fall semester.
Of the 299 teams that compete in the NCAA Division I for men’s cross country, only 98 were recognized as USTFCCCA All-Academic award winners.
21 of the 31 men listed on Army’s roster carried above a 3.0 cumulative grade point average to help the Black Knights to a team GPA of 3.14.
Army finished third at the Patriot League Championships this season and closed out the year by sending an athlete to compete in the NCAA Championships for the first time in nine years. Senior John Mickowski earned that trip with his first team All-Region finish at the Northeast Regional Championships.
“It’s exciting to know our kids are performing this well outside of practice and competitions,” said head coach Jerry Quiller. “These are the kind of awards that truly make us proud.”
