The Renegades close out a six-game road trip with a 12-3 loss to the Mahoning Valley Scrappers Monday in front of 2,021 fans at Eastwood Field.
The Scrappers offense came out swinging as the entire starting line up, except for the designated hitter Corteze Armstrong, recorded a hit as Mahoning Valley won back-to-back games for the first time since June 24 and 25 at Auburn.
With a 1-for-4 night Jason Tweedy extended his current on-base streak to league-leading 23 games. Tweedy has reached base in every contest he has had an at-bat in.
The Renegades sent their workhorse Frank De Los Santos (3-3, 3.86) to the mound for his sixth start of the year. De Los Santos allowed three runs on six hits in six innings of work as he recorded his third loss of the season. His 32 IP is second in the New York-Penn League to Robert Roth (34.1 IP) of Williamsport.
The Scrappers continued where they left off Sunday night plating three-runs in the home half of the first on three hits. With Isaias Velasquez on second Jeremine Tice hit a seeing eye single to right field allowing Velasquez to score. After a double steal by Tice and Douglas Pickens left runners at second and third Scrappers Juan Valdes hit a bases clearing line drive to right field to bring the score to 3-0, in favor of Mahoning Valley.
The Renegades added two runs of their own in the fourth inning to bring the game with in one run. Tweedy lead the inning off with his, team-leading, sixth double of the season and scored two batters later on a Kyeong Kang 4-3 groundout. The Renegades brought the score to 3-2, in favor of the Scrappers, on a Jacob Jefferies RBI single which scored Justin Reynolds from second.
The Renegades offense was able to muster up one more run in the sixth but it would not be enough. The Renegades defense allowed two runs in the fourth and then reliever Scott Welch surrendered seven earned runs on seven hits in the eighth inning.
Welch was greeted in the eighth with six straight singles and four runs. After the first sixth batters recorded singles Welch was able to retire the next two batters before giving up a three-run home run to Velasquez to bring the score to its final, 12-3.
The Renegades return home Tuesday morning to enjoy a rare day off before returning to action Wednesday night for a three-game series vs. the Auburn Doubledays. The Renegades are giving the starting nod to Chris Andujar (0-1, 5.82) with the first pitch slated for 7:05 p.m.
