The Renegades were unable to defeat the Staten Island Yankees Sunday afternoon in the rubber match of the three-game series falling 3-0 in front of 7,171 fans at Richmond County Bank Ballpark at St. George.
Despite recording seven hits on the night compared to the Yankees four the Renegades were unable to produce any runs leaving seven men stranded on the base path. Three of the Renegades seven hits came of the bat of designated hitter Jacob Jefferies, the Rays third round pick in this years June First Year Player Draft. Jefferies went 3-for-4 with a leadoff double in the fifth inning.
Opening Day starter Tyree Hayes got the nod for the second time this season and was looking to rebound from his last outing. Hayes was able to turn things around hurling 4.2 innings and giving up two runs on two hits. Hayes was credited for the loss brining his record to 0-2 and his ERA to 8.44.
Hayes was able to keep the Yanks offense at bay until the third inning when they plated two runs. The inning started off with a leadoff single of the bat of D.J. Hollingsworth who advanced to second on a throwing error by Renegades right fielder Kyeong Kang. After a walk and ground out Hayes was faced with runners on second and third and two outs. Daniel Brewer broke the three-inning stalemate with a bases clearing single to right field to give the Yanks a two-run lead.
Marquis Fleming came into the game during the fifth inning to reliever the starker Hayes. Fleming threw 1.2 innings but before coming out of the game he allowed the Yanks to plate an insurance run in the seventh.
The bottom of the seventh started out with a leadoff single courtesy of Jahdiel Santamaria. Santamaria advanced to second on a sacrafice bunt during the next at-bat and then scored on a Addison Maruszak RBI single to left field. Maruszak’s line-drive single brought the score to its final 3-0 in favor of the Yankees.
Te Yankees pitching staff was led by starter Casey Erickson. Erickson earned his first win of the season hurling six innings of five-hit baseball. Pat Venditte came into the game in the ninth and earned his first save of the season pitching a hitless ninth.
The Renegades start a three-game series against the Brooklyn Cyclones tomorrow at 7:00 p.m. in Brooklyn. The Renegades will be sending Frank De Ls Santos (0-1) to the mound.
