FAIRFAX, VA – The Marist baseball team won its second series of 2017, as the Red Foxes topped the George Mason Patriots 4-1 in Game 3 on Sunday to capture the 2-1 series victory. With the win, Marist now stands at 6-4, while the Patriots fall to 4-7.

Junior Andrew Rouse led the Red Foxes offensively going 3-for-5 on the day with a run scored. Redshirt freshman Tyler Kapuscinski chipped in a 1-for-4 effort with two runs scored, sophomore Frankie Gregoire finished 1-for-4 with a run scored, Patrick Lightner chipped in a 1-for-4 effort and redshirt junior Greg Kocinski finished with one RBI.

On the mound, redshirt junior Scott Boches gave Marist a strong outing, getting the win while throwing six and two thirds innings, giving up one run on five hits with four strikeouts. Junior Mike Coss pitched two thirds of an inning and finished with no runs on no hits with a walk and senior Sean Keenan picked up his first save of the year, throwing one and two thirds innings of no runs on no hits with one strikeout.

The Red Foxes opened the scoring in the top of the first inning. Rouse and Kapuscinski led off with singles to set up men on second and third with Kapuscinski reaching second on the throw to try and get Rouse at third. During the next at bat, Rouse scored on a wild pitch and Kapuscinski advanced to third and two batters later, scored on a Kocinski ground out and Marist was ahead 2-0.

George Mason got on the board in the bottom of the inning when Mike Smith led off with a hit by pitch and Tyler Nelin singled to left center to set up men on first and third. Logan Driscoll grounded out to the pitcher, scoring Smith, trimming their deficit to 2-1.

In the top of the sixth, the Red Foxes added to their lead when Gregoire led off with a single through the right side. Two batters later, Randy Taveras reached on a fielding error by the third baseman and Matt Pagano reached on a fielding error by the second baseman, scoring Gregoire and the lead was 3-1.

Two innings later, Kapuscinski reached on a fielding error by the third baseman and advanced to second and third on back-to-back ground outs before Taveras again reached on a fielding error by the second baseman that allowed Kapuscinski to score and it was 4-1 Marist.

Down to their last at bat, the Patriots came to bat in the bottom of the ninth but Keenan, who replaced Coss in the eighth inning, retired the side on a strike out and back-to-back fly outs for the win.

Up next, Marist travels to Annapolis, MD on Saturday, March 11th for a doubleheader vs Central Connecticut State University (10:30 AM) and host Navy (2:30 PM).
