Red Foxes fall 2-0 in rubber match against Manhattan

Eric Helmrich tallied two hits for the Red Foxes during the team’s 2-0 defeat against MAAC rival Manhattan on Sunday afternoon.

RIVERDALE - The Marist baseball team dropped the rubber match of its three game series at Manhattan, falling 2-0 on Sunday afternoon in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) game.

Zach Shank and Eric Helmrich each had two hits for the Red Foxes, as Shank extended his hitting streak to 13 games. Matt Pagano and Jake Berry also recorded hits. Left-hander starter Rich Vrana took the loss, falling to 2-1, as he gave up one unearned run on two hits in four innings. Marist outhit Manhattan 6-5, but grounded into four double plays on the afternoon.

The Jaspers (13-15, 5-4 MAAC), picked to finish first in the MAAC preseason coaches’ poll, opened the scoring in the bottom of the first, getting on the board without the benefit of a hit.

Manhattan scratched across its only other run in the sixth inning when Joe Rock hit an RBI single up the middle.

Scott McClennan pitched all nine innings for Manhattan, earning the complete game shutout with one strikeout. He also did not walk a batter.
