YAPHANK - Mount Saint Mary College fell into an early hole on Friday afternoon and never recovered, falling to Baruch College, 7-5, in the team’s season opener.
The Knights committed three errors in the opening inning, spotting the Bearcats a 3-0 lead. Baruch doubled the lead in the third, due in large part to a two-run homer from sophomore Eric Ulino.
Mount Saint Mary responded with a pair of runs in the bottom of the third, getting an RBI single from junior Brian Buechele and an RBI double from senior Michael Morelli.
With freshman relief pitcher Sean Betterly performing well, the Knights scratched out two more runs in the sixth via an RBI triple from junior Vinnie Carminati and a sac fly from Morelli.
Baruch tacked on another run in the seventh, btu the Knights weren’t ready to go away just yet. An RBI single from senior Thomas McNoble in the eighth cut the deficit back to two at 7-5, but the Mount would get no closer.
