Vassar bats come alive for 37 runs against RIT
Vassar Senior Liam Lee went 7-for-7 with three RBIs and four runs during the Brewers’ sweep of RIT. Vassar won 14-0 in game one, and 23-2 in game two.
Poughkeepsie - The Vassar College baseball team lit up the scoreboard with a combined 37 runs and 44 hits in a pair of wins, 14-0 and 23-2, against Rochester Institute of Technology on Saturday.
John MacGregor pitched a five-hit complete game shutout and had plenty of run support as Vassar won the first game 14-0. In game two, Vassar surged for 12 runs on nine hits in the first inning en route to a 23-2 rout.
The Brewers (8-12, 6-6 Liberty) went 3-1 against RIT and next play cross-river rival SUNY New Paltz on Wednesday, April 11, at 4:00 p.m. The Tigers (8-13, 4-8 Liberty) host Keuka on Wednesday at 3:00 at RIT Field.
Vassar loaded the bases with a pair of hits and a hit batter to begin game two, and Jason Garfinkel commenced the 12-run onslaught with a two-RBI single to left. Dave Robbins put Vassar up 4-0 with a two-RBI double to the gap. A.J. Kim singled for a run and the leadoff hitter, Liam Lee, pushed the lead to 7-0 with a scorching two-RBI double down the first baseline. The final five runs of the inning came on a passed ball, an RBI-single by Mike Perrone, a second double by Robbins, and a two-RBI single by Sean Morash.
Vassar’s offense never let up, scattering 11 more runs over the next eight innings, led by Lee’s 7-for-7 performance with three RBIs and four runs. Lee reached base on all eight plate appearances. Perrone went 5-for-6 with three RBIs and four runs. Joe Lovizio allowed two runs on six hits in six innings to earn the win.
Vassar took control of game one with a six-run third inning as Perrone led off with a chopper up the middle and scored on a sacrifice fly by Robbins. Morash poked a liner through the left side to drive in Garfinkel and put Vassar ahead 3-0. With two outs and runners on second and third, AJ Kim roped a liner to the hot corner for two RBIs and a 5-0 Vassar lead. On the next play, McCormack stroked a gapper to right center to score Kim from first for a 6-0 lead. Vassar added its seventh run as Lee smacked a liner up the middle to score McCormack.
In the top of the fourth, Vassar added three more runs to take a 10-0 lead with a two-RBI double by Kim and an RBI single by McCormack. Kim went 2-for-5 with three RBIs and two runs while McCormack went 3-for-4 with three RBIs and one run.
MacGregor pitched a gem for Vassar, allowing only three hits. He improved to 1-1 with the shutout win. Ron Canestro allowed seven runs on 10 hits to earn the loss.
