Poughkeepsie - The Vassar women’s volleyball team closed out its regular season and prepared for the upcoming Liberty League Tournament with a 3-0 (25-10, 25-10, 25-15) victory over Purchase College Monday evening at Kenyon Hall.
The Brewers are now 21-8 on the season and seeded No. 2 in the Liberty League Tournament that will be played at the Athletics & Fitness Center on Friday and Saturday. Vassar meets Union in the 4:00 p.m. opening match and St. Lawrence at 8:00 pm in Friday’s evening play.
Prior to the contest, Vassar honored its graduating seniors Jasmin Iskandar, Tess Johnson and Sarah Potts who were playing their final regular season home game against Purchase.
Purchase had an early 3-1 lead in the first set, but Vassar took a 5-4 lead on a kill by freshman Chloe McGuire and never looked back. A 15-3 scoring run that pushed the score to 20-7 was highlighted by five thunderous kills without an attack error by Johnson and a pair by sophomore Amy Bavosa.
The combination of Bavosa’s play at net and Purchase miscues led the Brewers to a quick 25-10 win in the second set. Vassar raced out to a 10-3 lead that was momentarily stopped by a kill from Purchase sophomore outside hitter Olivia Hintz. The Brewers controlled play thereafter, a couple of kills and a service ace coming from Potts en route to the 25-10 win.
The third set was plagued by attack errors by both teams. Purchase junior outside hitter Erika Stahl tied the set 10-10 with a crosscourt kill, but the Brewers got a much needed kill from Bavosa and nifty frontcourt play from freshman Cebe Loomis to take the next six straight points for a 16-10 lead. Potts secured Vassar’s last four points.
Vassar was led by Johnson’s seven kills and six from Bavosa. Junior Chelsea Mottern had seven digs and Iskandar added six. Freshman Hilary Koenigs had 12 set assists and fellow freshman Hannah Cassius had six. Potts had four service aces, five digs, two block assists and one solo block in her final Keynon Hall contest.
