Vassar Volleyball Earns AVCA Academic Awards
POUGHKEEPSIE - The Vassar College men’s and women’s volleyball teams each received recognition from the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) recently with the release of the 2013-2014 AVCA Team Academic Award. The AVCA handed out 684 team honors this season, which broke the previous record of 623 from 2012-2013.
The award honors programs, both in high school and collegiately, that maintained a team cumulative grade point average of at least 3.30 on a 4.0 scale during the last academic year. The Brewers earned the award during the previous three years for both the men and women’s teams, while the women’s squad at VC has earned the accolade in four consecutive seasons. The Vassar men’s squad was one of only seven honored this season, while the women’s squad helped comprise a group of 129 in Division III women’s volleyball.
“Too often athletic participation is associated with academic underachievement and this stereotype is simply false when it comes to volleyball,” said AVCA Executive Director Kathy DeBoer. “Couple the smarts represented by these teams with the competitive experience and team-focused training gained on the court and we have a potent formula for future leadership! What a significant contribution that is by their coaches and schools.”
“I’m really proud of our team’s performance in the classroom this past season and they continue to raise the bar,” said Vassar men’s volleyball head coach Rob Wolter. “To be one of only two men’s volleyball teams in Division III to earn this award says a lot about our players and their commitment to their studies.”
“We are always pleased to receive this award as it is a standing team goal,” said Vassar head women’s volleyball coach Jonathan Penn. “It displays the team’s ongoing commitment to academics and the dedication they give to all they do. We’re very proud.”
