New Paltz - It took five sets, but the Mount Saint Mary College women’s volleyball team earned their first win of the season with a 3-2 defeat of Johnson & Wales on Friday night at the New Paltz Hawk Invite. The Knights finished 1-3 and are 1-8 for the season.
MSMC opened the tournament with a three-set loss to New Paltz. Senior Teresa Sorrentino led the team with eight kills, but the Knights couldn’t get over the hump, falling 25-20, 25-22, and 25-23. Junior Lauren Halverson had 23 assists and a team-high three aces.
In their next match, the Knights dominated the opening set (25-12), but dropped the next two (14-25 and 21-25). Thanks to nearly error-free hitting, they were able to take the fourth set (25-17) and then captured the fifth set (15-11) without making an error. Sorrentino led the way once again with 12 kills and a team-high 14 digs.
Facing undefeated Clarkson University on Saturday, MSMC lost a narrow first set (23-25), then quickly dropped sets two (16-25) and three (11-25).
Mount Saint Mary closed out the tournament with a straight-set loss to Fredonia State University. Game scores were 19-25, 6-25, and 19-25.
The Mount will host the College of Mount St. Vincent at 11:00 a.m. in the Kaplan Center on September 24th.
