The City of Newburgh claims it’s going green, but every year they cut down a beautiful tree to place at the foot of Broadway during the holiday season that eventually becomes mulch. If the city were truly "going green" it should actively seek out a viable alternative to this annual tree destruction.
As a possible alternative, the city could "go green" by utilizing the tree on the front lawn of the new City Court Building on the corner of Broadway and 9W. The tree could be decorated as usual and other religious items could be added to the lawn area to be more inclusive. The display would be in a highly visible part of town that receives a large amount of traffic and all city residents could enjoy the display.
By taking this action, the City of Newburgh would be taking a leadership role in taking care of the environment and not just producing lip service. It’s carbon footprint would also be reduced by eliminating the trucks that haul the tree, the gas powered chain saws that cut down the tree and the mulching machine.
Where are the people on the Shade Tree Commission on this? Are the two members of the five member committee only concerned with planting trees and not saving them?
