New Windsor - First grade students at New Windsor Elementary School celebrated the 100th day of school recently in an annual celebration that recognizes their hard work and accomplishments in education since the beginning of the school year.
"Each classroom started counting the numbers of days of school since September 2, 2009, the first day of school. This helped the students recognize place value. Each day we discussed the ones, tens, and hundreds," explained first grade teacher Anna Cahill. "When we were approaching the 100th day the students’ anticipation rose. Each day they would figure out how many more days until the 100th."
First grade students in Cahill’s class, along with students from Kristi Allen, Michelle Delgado, and Deanna Muller’s classes and respective teaching assistants Margaret DePuy, Kattya Fernandez, Gail Hickey, Gail Cinnante, and Kimberly Caban, rotated in shifts and worked on special projects during the course of the day. Projects included a Mosaic art piece created from one hundred small pieces of colorful construction paper, cereal necklaces made with one hundred pieces in various shapes and colors in groups of ten, a math related scavenger hunt in which students were given one hundred dollars in "money" to purchase items around the classroom and students traced their feet on paper to create one hundred colorful feet along the hallway wall following the event.
"The creativity this year was wonderful. It was a great day all around. The students should be proud of all that they have accomplished so far this year," Cahill said of the annual event.
