Newburgh - On Fri., Nov.13, 2009, a bilingual math workshop was held at Meadow Hill Global Explorations School in Newburgh. The event was organized by five bilingual classroom teachers and a special education bilingual resource teacher, Michael Martinez, Raquel Bonilla, Nancy Nieves, Dominga Garcia, Wanda Rodriguez, and Dennis Camt. The teachers took the initiative to organize the event as a way to increase parent involvement among their bilingual parents, but more importantly to empower their ELL (English Language Learners) with essential math skills at various grade levels.
According to teacher Dennis Camt, "Overall, the event was a great success. Many parents were content that such an event was available for them."
The objective of the workshop was to provide parents with various teaching/learning methods on reinforcing primary math skills. Parents created their own learning centers to share with their children in a fun, but meaningful way.
