Starting Healthy in Newburgh

NECSD employees along with community businesses and residents came out to celebrate “Starting Healthy in Newburgh” recently presented by the Newburgh Teaching Assistants. The Newburgh Teaching Assistants applied and were accepted for a three year NYSUT (NY State United Teacher) grant which sponsored the event.

Newburgh - On Saturday, April 25th, Newburgh Enlarged City School District Teaching Assistants held "Starting Healthy in Newburgh" a health/educational/fun fair for local area residents at Gidney Avenue Memorial School in Newburgh. Recently, the Newburgh Teaching Assistants applied and were accepted for a three year NYSUT (NY State United Teacher) grant which sponsored the event. The group is only the second non-teaching group in NYSUT history to receive this grant.

The purpose of the event was to help parents of Pre-K and Kindergarten students get their children off to a good, healthy start before entering school in the fall. The event was designed to educate the children and their parents on issues such as vaccinations, proper nutrition and exercise, and dental health. During the day, healthy snacks were provided to guests in attendance. In addition, family-friendly events such as face painting, bounces houses, and entertainment were on hand during the day’s events.

Volunteers for the day included the LAP committee members, NECSD Teaching Assistants, Nurses, Teachers, CSEA security and aides, Administrators, Central Administration, Board of Education members, NYSUT officers, GAMS Dancers, and Dawn Lambert "The Exercise Lady".
