Montgomery – The Carly Fund was recently created following Carly Marie Sigelbaum’s tragic death on October 17, 2008 as the result of injuries sustained in a car accident. At 9 years old, Carly was just beginning 4th grade at Gardnertown Fundamental Magnet School. Carly’s family, along with the assistance of many friends, has established The Carly Fund as a lasting way to honor Carly and to keep her memory alive and vibrant. The Carly Fund is a component charitable fund of the Community Foundation of Orange and Sullivan.
Carly was an only child who lived Newburgh with her parents, Louis and Carla Sigelbaum. Carly was an avid gymnast and participated in competitions with the Gym Kids Gymnastics Team, played soccer with the Town of Newburgh Soccer League and the Cornwall United Soccer Team. She was a huge Yankees, Jets, and World Wrestling fan, and especially enjoyed going to Disney World with her family. She was an all-around little girl. While enjoying her religious education classes at Sacred Heart Church in Newburgh, she also delighted in bike riding, reading, and collecting special coins and dollars. Reaching out to people of all ages was one of her endearing qualities.
Through The Carly Fund, grants that reflect Carly’s love for others will be awarded to local school or nonprofit organizations that focus on "random acts of kindness." In addition, a scholarship will be awarded annually to one outstanding male student and one outstanding female student from Newburgh Free Academy (the school from which Carly would have graduated in 2017).
The Community Foundation manages charitable funds and handles all of the fiscal reporting and administration for each charitable fund under its umbrella, thereby keeping administration costs much lower than a private foundation, and allowing more dollars to flow toward grants and scholarships.
Contributions to The Carly Fund are welcome. Donations can be made to CFOS-The Carly Fund and sent to the Community Foundation of Orange and Sullivan, 30 Scott’s Corners Drive, Suite 202, Montgomery, NY 12549. Donations may also be made on-line at www.cfoc-ny.org. The Community Foundation of Orange and Sullivan is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. All gifts are tax deductible under current tax laws.
On Saturday, May 16, 2009, from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., friends in the community will host Carly’s Kids’ Day for the Young and The Young at Heart at Chadwick Lake Park, Route 300, Town of Newburgh, to celebrate and honor Carly Marie Sigelbaum and to raise additional dollars for the charitable endeavors which The Carly Fund will support, now and forever. Please visit the Carly’s Kids’ Day website at www.carlyskidsday.org for sponsorship information and to join in the fun!
