Vaniolla Saintil, the first place girls winner, stands proudly with her trophy following the completion of the race.

Newburgh - Early in the morning of Mon., June 9, 2008, on what turned out to be one of the hottest days so far this summer, 5th and 6th grade students at GAMS Tech Magnet School on Gidney Avenue laced up their running shoes for the 21st annual Mile Run. The event was held in the GAMS playground.

The annual event was organized by physical education teacher Gary Byrnes, music teacher Karin McCartney, and computer teacher Goncalo Pinheiro.

The 2008 first place overall winners were Vaniolla Saintil for the girls and Ronny Gutierrez for the boys.

Several former students from GAMS have gone on to compete in track and field for Newburgh Free Academy, including Randy Patterson, Chris and Matt Babcock, Kierstan McCartney, Lia Gizzarelli, Chris Carter, Chante Coppedge, Morgan Rittweger, and Nicole McRae.
