NEWBURGH - Recently, Meadow Hill Global Explorations School students in Newburgh celebrated National Heart Health Month in a special way, by honoring former classmate Johnny Sileno, who passed away from cancer in 2010.
Now in the fourth year, Jump for Johnny allows students and staff to take a break from their regular day to celebrate and remember Sileno with joy. One by one, participants laughed and smiled as they "Jumped for Johnny" in the school gymnasium. Healthy habits and facts were also shared with students throughout the month as part of the lesson.
As part of the Jump for Johnny event, students participated in Jump Rope for Heart and Hoops for Heart. In addition, Meadow Hill hosted a faculty vs. 6th-8th grade student basketball game on Friday, February 21, 2014. Seventeen faculty members and thirty students participated in the game. The event raised over $400 for the American Heart Association (AHA).
"We would like to thank everyone who participated in the American Heart Association Fundraiser. In total, we raised over $5,000, exceeding our goal of $4,000! Mrs. Cross’ class raised the most for Jump Rope for Heart and Mrs. Hansen-DeMarco’s class raised the most for Hoops for Heart. During the incentive day, Coach Jim Butrick was a great sport to allow top fundraiser Tina Zhang to shave his head. Everyone’s dedication contributed to the great success of this fundraiser," explained Physical Education Teacher and event co-organizer Elissa Kenney. Kenney added that the event would not have been possible without the help of teachers and faculty as well as the Meadow Hill Custodial Staff and PTO.
