NEWBURGH - On Tuesday, November 5, 2013, students and faculty members at Meadow Hill Global Explorations Magnet School in Newburgh honored local veterans by hosting the 9th Annual Veterans Appreciation Breakfast complete with a continental breakfast and observance program.
Each year prior to the event, teachers explain the role of veterans in America to their students. For several of the students, the lessons hit close to home because they have friends and family members that have served or are currently serving in the military. The students’ respect for the veterans was evident in their heartfelt letters and poems written for the event.
During the breakfast, students performed songs, shared letters, artwork and poems that they created for the veterans. Students were also involved in hosting the event, serving breakfast and spoke to the veterans about their service. In addition to artwork, students created medals to present to the veterans as a thank you for their service.
“Through this experience our students are able to pay homage to the men and women who have risked their lives so that we may all continue the freedoms we have in America. We want our students to make connections to history in meaningful ways. Just as we educate their minds, we also want to develop their hearts and souls,” explained Principal Lynnette Brunger.
Assistant Principal Marcie Heywood echoed Brunger’s sentiment, “This special breakfast allows our students to interact with the men and women who have served our country while also connecting the school to the community. Whenever students can be involved in connections with the community, opportunities to serve others and experience valuable history firsthand, it is our responsibility to make that happen.”
