NEWBURGH - On Saturday, August 24, 2013, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, Iota Alpha Omega Chapter partnered with the Newburgh Enlarged City School District (NECSD) to host "Parent University - School Cool".
Held at the State University of New York Orange Community College, AKA/Parent University offered parents and guardians an opportunity to learn about NYS Common Core Standards, School Accountability and Navigating the School System from educational professionals of the Newburgh School District. Additionally, Iota Alpha Omega Chapter partnered with the Tallie Carter Law Firm, New York Life, the Orange County Sheriff’s Department, the Dutchess County Health Department and Girl Scouts of America - Heart of the Hudson Council to provide workshops including "Internet/Social Media Safety" and "Healthy Families". The children on hand took part in the "Dollars and $ense: Understanding Money for Kidz" workshop offered by Girl Scouts of America - Heart of the Hudson through Kidz AKAdemy.
Participants received a Parent University Passport stamped at the end of each workshop. Parents who attended a minimum of three workshops received backpacks filled with school supplies provided by the Newburgh Enlarged City School District. A total of 19 Iota Alpha Omega Chapter members assisted in the event planning and program execution; 115 adults and children of Newburgh participated and 85 backpacks were distributed.
