Goshen - Wow, it’s September already! Another summer passed, another school year started. As thousands of children return to school across Orange County this month, I urge you to take extra precaution when you’re behind the wheel. Be alert for students walking and at bus stops, be mindful of speed limits in school zones, and watch for school buses. Remember that when the red lights are flashing on the school bus, New York State law requires you to stop. I wish all the students, teachers, and parents a happy, successful school year.
This September also marks the ninth anniversary of one of the most tragic days in our nation’s history and certainly in our County. On September 11, 2001, 44 Orange County residents perished when terrorists attacked the World Trade Center. Those 44 men and women were our family and friends - fathers, mothers, sisters, brothers, police officers, firefighters, business people - they were greatly loved and remain deeply missed. We must never forget them, nor the many others lost at the WTC, in Pennsylvania, and at the Pentagon, and the sacrifices made on that awful day.
I invite you to attend Orange County’s September 11th Patriot Day Remembrance Ceremony. The event will be hosted at the Orange County Arboretum at Thomas Bull Memorial Park in Montgomery and begins at 5 p.m. on September 11th. The Remembrance Ceremony is free and open to all.
Families and survivors of September 11th and families of local military personnel, along with elected officials, special guests, and community members will gather to pay tribute to those who were lost. Lt. Col. Hugh Lynn Atkinson, Commanding Officer in the U.S. Marine Corp. will be a guest speaker. We will also have volunteers from around the County providing Honor Guard, music, vocals, and inspirational remarks.
If you’re not able to join us on September 11th, please be sure to take time that Saturday to remember all of the loved ones who were lost.
Until next week, wishing you much health and happiness...
