Goshen - People lead such busy lives these days that it seems like we’re always on the run. As County Executive, I know what it’s like to have a full schedule. But what about those residents in our community who are homebound? Imagine if you weren’t able to get yourself to the doctor’s office or go grocery shopping. Unfortunately, being homebound is a reality for many Orange County residents. Thankfully, there are many County programs that can help them out.
The Orange County Department of Mental Health’s Homebound Program provides in-home mental health counseling and treatment services to individuals who are unable to attend community-based clinic programs. Comprised of a team of licensed social workers and a psychiatrist, these experienced clinicians are often a vital lifeline to the homebound individuals they visit. To obtain admission to Homebound Services, call (845) 858-1456 to schedule an assessment.
Our Health Department also offers two vital services to homebound Orange County residents. When an individual becomes restricted to their home following surgery, an illness, or disability, the Certified Home Health Agency provides therapeutic and preventative services, including skilled nursing, wound care, physical therapy, and occupational therapy, in one’s home upon referral by the patient’s physician. The Long Term Home Health Care program offers a coordinated in-home health care plan and social services for people who are ill or disabled. It’s a beneficial alternative for those who would otherwise require nursing home care. To learn more about these two services visit www.healthyorange.com.
Probably our best known program for homebound residents is the Home Delivered Meals program. Thanks to the generous donation of time from a team of volunteers, this program delivers hot meals each day to hundreds of homebound seniors. It’s also a critical opportunity to check on their well being. For more information or to volunteer, contact (845) 615-3732.
Until next week, I wish you much health and happiness.
