Through the sponsorship of Senator Bill Larkin (R-C, Cornwall-on-Hudson), Independent Living, Inc. has been approved by the New York State Finance Committee to receive an Economic Development Assistance Program Grant of $250,000 to develop a Disability Training, Technology and Conference Center. The grant will be administered through the Dormitory Authority of the State of New York. "Independent Living has consistently demonstrated leadership in paving the way for new possibilities for people with disabilities," said Senator Larkin. "I was pleased to sponsor this initiative to provide a facility that will host a broad range of activities related to improving the quality of life for individuals with disabilities, and providing opportunities for them to achieve economic self-sufficiency through competitive employment," "We are very grateful to Senator Larkin for his assistance and ongoing support," said Executive Director, Douglas Hovey. "We anticipate that our Training Center will attract people with disabilities, senior citizens, area businesses, employers, educators, parents, advocates, therapists and other health care and human service professionals. Our objective is to transform our building at 5 Washington Terrace in Newburgh by converting 5,000 square feet of unused space into a fully accessible, state-of-the-art facility that will comfortably accommodate a wide variety of events and activities. Our vision for this space includes a demonstration center for durable medical equipment and assistive technology, a large conference suite with break-out areas and classrooms, offices, a lounge area and fully accessible restrooms." Independent Living, Inc. is a consumer-directed, cross-disability service and advocacy organization dedicated to enhancing the quality of life for persons with disabilities. Its goal is to provide a barrier-free society with opportunities for all persons to achieve their maximum potential.
