This Week in Orange County 5-14-08

Ed Diana

Once again the voices of happy children were heard in the Government Center as we hosted children from the Goshen Intermediate School. These young people toured the Government Center and participated in a mock session of the Legislature. They debated the extension of the school day and provided well thought out arguments both for and against making the school day longer.

I would also like to commend their teachers for allowing them to visit. The great questions they asked are an obvious testament to the quality education they are receiving.

I would also like to spotlight the achievement of one of our County employees Angela Kays-Burden, who is Director of Grants for Orange County Government, who recently earned a nationally recognized credential in the grants field with the first cohort ever to do so. The recognition is conferred by the Grant Professionals Certification Institute, Inc. (GPCI, pronounced “gypsy”), an affiliate of the American Association of Grant Professionals (AAGP). Ms. Kays-Burden is one of 170 certified grant designers and managers who were conferred the “GPC” title as Grant Professional Certified – one of nine in New York State - after the history-making first offering of the GPC exam. The credential recognizes proficiency in standards that include tenure in the profession, education, demonstrated achievement and a commitment to service for public and private philanthropy. Angie has helped to coordinate a tremendous amount and array of grants to benefit our residents and hosted several training sessions for organizations with the County. Hat’s off to Angie Kays-Burden for her outstanding accomplishment!

Also, Dr. Hudson our Orange County Commissioner of Health would like to remind residents that while asthma is one of the most common health problems in New York State, parents can learn to manage and prevent their child’s asthma attacks. As always, consult your primary care physician or visit one of the following:

The Greater Hudson Valley Family Health Center, 3 Washington Center, Newburgh NY 12550, Phone: 563-8000

McCauley Primary Care Center, 140 Hammond Street, Port Jervis NY 12771, Phone: 858-7280

Middletown Community Health Center, 21 Orchard Street, Middletown NY 10940, Phone: 343-7614

Hudson River Community Health, Alamo Center, 888 Pulaski Highway, Goshen NY 10924, Phone: 651-2298

Hudson River Community Health, 75 Orange Avenue, Walden NY, Phone:  778-2700

Until next week, let me wish you health and happiness…
