Legislation Would Honor a True NY Hero

John Hall
U.S. Representative John Hall (D-NY19) today introduced legislation to re-designate the U.S. Post Office at 76 Brookside Avenue in Chester, NY as the “1st Lieutenant Louis Allen Post Office.” Allen was killed while on active military duty near Tikrit, Iraq on Wednesday June 8, 2005. He was killed at the age of 34 by a mine explosion for which another member of the Armed Forces has been charged.

“1st Lieutenant Allen was a pillar of his community and a model National Guardsman, serving his country dutifully for many years. As a teacher and long-time resident of the Hudson Valley, 1st Lieutenant Allen had roots in our community, and it is important to pay a lasting tribute to his service and sacrifice,” said Hall

1st Lieutenant Allen maintained an active role in his local community. He worked as a science teacher at George F. Baker High School in Tuxedo, NY and joined the New York National Guard in 2000. He was deployed to New York City with the National Guard to respond to the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. At the time of his death, he was serving in Iraq as a member of the New York National Guard’s 101st Cavalry Regiment, 42nd Infantry Division.

1st Lieutenant Allen is survived by his wife, Barbara, four young sons, parents, Robert and Vivian Allen, and siblings, Laurene Sandstrom, Robert Allen, Jr., Jennifer Davis, and Victoria Jackson.

“1st Lieutenant Allen will long be remembered by family, friends, students and colleagues,” said Hall. “Renaming this Post Office in his honor will be a tangible reminder of the joy he brought to them and the contributions he made to his community and his country.”
