Sumner Wants Coughlan to Resign

POUGHKEEPSIE - Dutchess County Democratic Chairwoman Elisa Sumner has called on GOP Dutchess County officials to demand that Jim Coughlan resign as County Comptroller for his racist and homophobic comments on twitter.

"While everyone is decrying Comptroller Jim Coughlan’s comments, no one is calling for his resignation. I find that reprehensible", states Dutchess County Democratic Chairwoman Elisa Sumner.

"The citizens of Dutchess County deserve better representation in our county government than this. Further, it is disappointing that Dutchess County Legislature Chairman Rob Rolison is attacking his opponent for his comments, but stops short of calling for his resignation," added Chairwoman Sumner."How can Rolison claim that Coughlan’s racist statements disqualify Coughlan from being a candidate for State Senate, but ignore the fact that his fellow Republican, Coughlan, is not fit to hold public office as County Comptroller.

Chairwoman Sumner concluded, "The Dutchess County Democratic Committee is calling on County Executive Molinaro to break his silence and demand the immediate resignation of Dutchess County Comptroller Coughlan. Dutchess County government needs leadership that respects all our people and our diversity and does not tolerate such behaviour by our elected leaders who spew racial and homophobic epithets."
