A statement from Assemblyman Felix W. Ortiz:
As we kick off April, National Donate Life month, I am proud to commend the Department of Motor Vehicles and Dr. Mehmet Oz for launching a campaign to increase awareness and encourage enrollments in the New York State Donate Life Registry.
Organ donation has always been an issue close to my heart; I have championed Lauren’s Law, a legislation that asks driver’s license applicants to complete the section of the application that pertains to the organ donor registry. With a success rate of 80-90%, organ donations are considered the ultimate humanitarian deed; I encourage every fellow New Yorker to join the movement.
Only 11% of the population of New York is registered as an organ donor. This is an extremely low number compared to the national average of 43%. This should be a motivation to us all and a reminder that we are all connected, regardless of color, race or sexual orientation.
