$6 mil allocated to Beacon in wake of prison closure

Assemblyman Frank Skartados

Assemblyman Frank Skartados (D-Milton) recently announced that an agreement has been reached to allocate $6 million to assist the city of Beacon in redeveloping the Beacon Correctional Facility after its closure.

"While I fought hard to keep the facility open, I also made it a priority of mine to ensure that if the facility closed, the state would provide the resources needed to ensure the property could be redeveloped," Assemblyman Skartados said. "In the days and weeks to come, I’ll be working closely with local officials, community leaders and the Empire State Development Corporation to begin the process of redeveloping and re-purposing the correctional facility in the best way possible, as a new economic asset for the region and to create jobs."

Previously, Assemblyman Skartados wrote a letter to Governor Cuomo asking the governor for the redevelopment funds to be made available, should the prison be closed.
