For 21 years now, the Girl Scouts Heart of the Hudson and YWCA Orange County have hosted the annual Tribute to Women of Achievement of Orange County. The event recognizes women who live, work, or go to school in Orange County for their outstanding contributions to our community, for serving as role models to other women and girls, and for upholding the ideals of the Girl Scouts and YWCA.
Since the inception of Tribute, more than 200 women have been honored as Orange County Women of Achievement. This year, I am very proud to announce that Orange County Government’s very own Dr. Jean M. Hudson, Commissioner of the Department of Health, has been named a woman of achievement in the field of health care. For 10 years, Dr. Hudson has committed herself to ensuring that the health and wellness needs of our Orange County residents are met. It’s been quite a year already for Dr. Hudson; earlier this year, she was named Public Health Professional of the Year by the New York State Association of County Health Officials (NYSACHO).
Please join me in congratulating Dr. Hudson and her fellow 2013 Tribute to Women of Achievement of Orange County honorees. Once again, Girl Scouts and YWCA have selected an outstanding slate of honorees from the many nominated each year. Congratulations to:
• Arts - Dawn Ansbro - Goshen - Orange County Arts Council
• Business - Susan Crocker - Montgomery - Holbert’s Catering/Backyard Bistro
• Education - Beverly Braxton - Warwick - Warwick Valley School District, retired
• Human Services - Dawn Wilkin - Fishkill - Catholic Charities of Orange County
• Public Service - Nancy Proyect - Cornwall – Orange County Citizens Foundation
• Woman of the Future - Erin Collins - Goshen - Goshen High School
• Bobbie A. Lahey Memorial Award for Volunteer Services - Anita Manley – Newburgh
If you’re interested in meeting the honorees and hearing a great keynote speaker, be sure to save the date May 8, 2013 for the 21st annual Tribute to Women of Achievement of Orange County awards dinner at Anthony’s Pier 9 in New Windsor. For more information about the Tribute event, contact the Girl Scouts at 236-6002 or YWCA at 561-8050.
Under Dr. Hudson’s leadership, the Orange County Department of Health has been very busy. Take a look at all that the Health Department does on their pages on the County website at www.orangecountygov.com. Programs and services include community health outreach, intervention services, emergency preparedness, environmental health, medical examiner’s office, and public health nursing. They also offer Healthy Orange – a variety of programs and services to encourage a healthy lifestyle, including programs on smoking cessation, how to fight obesity, and the importance of a healthy diet and exercise.
Until next week, I wish you good health and happiness.
