Newburgh - On Tuesday, August 3, local organizations, churches, and community partners will join forces with thousands of communities nationwide for the 27th Annual National Night Out (NNO). The event, sponsored by the National Association of Town Watch (NATW) involves more than 10,000 communities from all 50 states, U.S. territories, Canadian cities and military bases around the world, with more than 34 million people expected to participate in “America’s Night Out Against Crime.”

This year’s all-free NNO events will be at a central location, Delano-Hitch Recreation Park, 401 Washington Street, from 5-9 p.m. The lineup of activities includes bouncy houses, a dunking booth, and a DJ. K104 will be broadcasting live and the soccer fields, basketball courts, and the Aquatic Center will be open all night. There will be free food and information available from the many partnering organizations.

NNO is designed to heighten crime and drug prevention awareness, generate support for and participation in local anticrime efforts, strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships; and send a message to criminals letting them know neighborhoods are organized and fighting back. This is the 13th year for NNO in the City of Newburgh, and last year, more than 5,000 residents participated across the city.

This year’s event was a multi-agency effort by Hudson Health Plan, Maternal-Infant Services Network, City of Newburgh Police Department, TEAM Newburgh, Mobile Life Support Services, Latinos Unidos, Occupations, Inc, Planned Parenthood Mid-Hudson Valley, Alcoholism & Drug Abuse Council, Orange County Dept. of Health, Orange County Probation, and Greater Newburgh Family YMCA

“Every year, the Police Department notes a significant drop in calls for service during National Night Out”, said Acting Chief Michael Ferrara. “We are optimistic that this year the trend will continue.”

“All residents and businesses should leave their porch and business lights on Tuesday, August 3 and join us at Delano-Hitch Park to celebrate Newburgh’s Night Out Against Crime and Violence. Let’s make Newburgh’s 2010 celebration the best ever,” said Mayor Nicholas Valentine.
