Newburgh - 1,000 Peace Flags, a temporary community-engaged art installation, will present a visual representation of community connection made possible through the power of the arts. The residents of Middletown and Newburgh will be guided through the making of this city-wide exhibit culminating in a burst of brilliant colored flags with their handwritten words of commitment and inspiration waving proudly throughout the neighborhoods.
On Monday, adults and children were seen in the Newburgh Free Library creating 12" x 12" colorful fabric flags with positive messages. The residents visual voices portrayed their vision of living healthy lives with meaningful work, good housing, safe neighborhoods, and places where children can play. The colorful flags will be flown block after block from porches, windows, trees and fences.
In collaboration with the SUNY Orange Center for Youth development, the project has been designed and will be implemented by Susan Handler Konvit, the Executive Director of The Arts Alliance of the Lower Hudson Valley.
