Cornwall - More than 2,000 people showed up on Friday for the Cornwall High School graduation. Most were their in support of the graduates, however a few came to hear the commencement speaker Gen. David Petraeus.
Petraeus, a member of the Cornwall High School Class of 1970, led the "long green line" of graduates out on the field of Cornwall High School.
People questioned if he would be able to keep the commitment he made to Principal Dr. Frank Sheboy several month ago, as earlier in the week, President Barack Obama appointed Petraeus to take over command of U.S. forces in Afghanistan
But true to his word, Petraeus showed up in true "commit to green" fashion.
In his commencement speech, Petraeus spoke of his time at the high school, which is now the middle school. Of how things have changed for the better and how he "couldn’t wait to make my escape."
That "escape" initially took him to West Point, NY, not too far of an escape. However, as he continued his military career, he came to appreciate Cornwall, the community and its schools. He told the graduates they would as well. "At some point in your life, you will come to appreciate that this community, and this school, are very special," Petraeus said.
The famous alumnus still reads local papers to keep up with the community he once called home. That was obvious as he recited several accomplishment that were achieved by the Class of 2010. From students sports achievements to their contribution with the Haiti relief efforts, Petraeus was impressed. Parents in the audience were equally impressed.
"It’s amazing that he would keep up with Cornwall, this school and the community," said one parent.
As Cornwall High School Valedictorian Gabrielle Favorito said, "No matter where life takes you, you will always be a green dragon!"
